Introduction to SCRD's Innovative Approach to Waste Management

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) has taken a significant step towards environmental conservation and waste management by installing food waste containers across various parks and community halls. This initiative is part of the SCRD's broader Organics Diversion Strategy, aiming to reduce waste and divert organics from the landfill. By employing Haul-All bear-resistant bins, the SCRD ensures the safety of wildlife while facilitating the community's effort in waste diversion.

The Urgent Need for Waste Diversion

Food waste is a major concern, constituting about 35% of the household garbage that ends up in the Sechelt Landfill. With the landfill's projected closure in 2026 due to capacity concerns, diverting food waste becomes not just an environmental issue but a logistical necessity. This program aims to extend the landfill's operational life by reducing the volume of waste that requires disposal.

The Composting Solution: Turning Waste into Resource

The SCRD's strategy includes processing collected food waste and food-soiled paper into compost through a regional food waste processor. This transformation of waste into compost represents a circular economy model, turning potential landfill material into a valuable resource for gardening and landscaping, thereby promoting sustainable resource use.

To ensure the success of this initiative, the SCRD encourages park visitors to adopt a "leave no trace" policy. This means responsibly disposing of food waste in the designated bear-resistant bins or, in areas where these bins aren't available, packing out food waste to prevent attracting wildlife and contributing to litter.
